About/Contact

I’m Liz. I teach English at a community college outside Vancouver, BC. I read a lot, and a lot of what I read is romance.  I started this blog to talk about what I’m reading and, occasionally, what I’m up to in the classroom. I don’t grade my reading; that’s too much like my day job.

The blog’s title comes from a conversation in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice about what makes an accomplished woman.  Mr. Darcy caps off his friends’ lengthy list of feminine skills by saying, “to all this she must yet add something more substantial, in the improvement of her mind by extensive reading.”

The title is ironic, as my reading is often of a kind not generally regarded as improving.  I’m the kind of person who’s got self-improving aims for blogging, though:

  • to write regularly, so that I do a better job teaching others to write
  • to read more thoughtfully and attentively, at least some of the time
